Jewellery Care Instructions
Windfall Jewellery is made from high quality precious metals and natural or lab created gemstones. Please follow the care instructions below to assure that your jewellery stay in the best condition possible.
GENERAL CARE
Always protect your jewellery from sharp blows, scratching, chemicals, sunlight and extreme heat/cold and nail polish remover or hairspray. Naturally your jewellery will scratch even if you think that you have barely worn it or are very careful, usually this happens just from day to day activities. The only way to never scratch a metal ring is to never wear it…and that is not much fun. We can remove light scratches from rings in store at request.
Avoid wearing while cleaning, gardening or performing sports activities.
Never go swimming wearing your jewellery, as chlorine in swimming pools can cause damage to all metals and will erode gold jewellery.
If you notice that your ring has moulded to a different shape from general wear then we can re-round your ring in store on request. Metal is malleable so normally rings will loose their round shape over time especially if the band is thin, regular grip to firm objects or hard hits to the metal.
TARNISHING AND DISCOLOURATION OF METAL
Store your jewellery in a soft lined box or pouch with an anti tarnish strip (a small black paper square provided in the box). Try to keep pieces apart so they don't rub together.
Your jewellery will age and tarnish naturally so if you want to keep your pieces in pristine condition, clean your jewellery regularly, using a professional jewellery cleaning product or polishing cloth provided. Always read the manufacturers instructions on cleaning products.
Be aware of tarnish which may occur as a result of oxidisation, caused by the interaction of silver, gold or plated jewellery with certain elements such as oxygen or sulphur as well as with certain acids in the skin. When a piece is left unworn for a period of time it may oxidise. Some people don’t react as well to certain alloys in metal and you would notice the ring being worn to discolour or the skin become itchy with wear. Please contact us if you feel that you are having an allergic reaction to a ring we have made.
STONE SET RINGS
Stone set pieces may become loose over time with the ring either changing shape from wear and tear or the claws can lift from being snagged. Claw set pieces MUST be worn with care!
If you are wearing knitted clothing or fabric gets caught between the claw and the stone it may lift the claw causing rattling of the stone. If you notice that you stone is loose or you have lost an accent stone please get in contact with us to discuss repair options.
If you have noticed that your stone set ring has become dull or cloudy it more than likely needs a good clean. We do sell cleaning kits on the website or you can always come in store and request a clean of your ring. A simple way to keep your stone (especially clearer stones) is to have a small dish of warm water and a soft bristle toothbrush with a small amount of chemical free soap like cattle soap. Soak the ring for a minute in the soapy water and then very gently brush underneath the cage where dead skin, moisturiser and other grime will build up. Please get in contact if you need assistance with the cleaning of your ring.
Be aware that softer stones like opals can NOT be cleaned like regular stones and specific care must be taken with them.
If you notice a crack in your stone after wearing it then it may have had contact made to it via a knock or bump causing trauma to the stone. Please get in contact with us if this is the case as we will have to assess what it is that caused the crack and your options moving forward. Please refer to the black diamond care card you were supplied with if you own a black diamond ring.
