Do I wear my engagement ring on my wedding day?

Wearing your engagement ring on your wedding day: Yes or no?

Whether you're the bride or groom, you’re always going to be nervous on your wedding day. Hey, you’re only human. And with so many variables at play, it's easy to forget the most minor of details.

But, there is one tiny detail that as the bride, you’ll want to be sure to remember, or at least have a plan for: wearing your engagement ring on your big day.

It’s a discussion as old as time, and it’s something that we’re frequently asked in our line of work by brides: Do you wear your engagement ring on your wedding day? The short answer is yes, but there are a few loop holes you’ll need to jump through first.

Do I have to put my engagement ring on after my wedding band?

Traditionally speaking, you are not meant to wear your engagement ring on your ring finger the day of your wedding until you’ve exchanged your vows and wedding bands.

Here’s the thing – your engagement ring is a symbol of yours and your partner’s commitment to one another. Your wedding band, also known as your eternity ring, is a symbol of everlasting love and is worn on the finger first as it is closest to your heart.

So, as tradition goes, you are not supposed to wear your engagement ring on the day of your wedding… At least not on your ring finger. But don’t worry, there are plenty of other ways you can wear your engagement ring on your wedding day (plus save yourself the stress or heartbreak of losing it) if you don’t want to be a rebel and wear it in it’s usual place anyway!

Ways to wear your engagement ring on your wedding day

Already fretting over losing your engagement ring on your big day? These are some clever ways you can wear and hide your engagement ring in plain sight.

Wear your engagement ring on the opposite hand

Let’s face it, it’s your wedding day, you’re going to want to wear your engagement ring. You may find it helpful – given that your fingers are of a similar size – to wear your engagement ring on your right ring finger instead of your left. That way you can easily slip it on and into its correct position once you’ve exchanged vows.

Expert tip: Make sure it fits! You don’t want your engagement ring to get stuck on your big day.

Wear your engagement ring on a bracelet

Another way of wearing your engagement ring on your wedding day is to add it to a piece of bridal jewellery you’re already wearing, like a bracelet. That way you can easily clip it off when you need it and pop it on your ring finger after your ceremony.

Be sure to check that the bracelet is secure though, you don’t want you to lose your engagement ring as you’re walking down the aisle.

Let your maid of honour hold your engagement ring

As you’d entrust your best man to carry your wedding ring, you may like to entrust your maid of honour to hold onto your engagement ring before and during your wedding ceremony. In saying that, your maid of honour may not have anywhere discreet to hold your engagement ring, so you may prefer to give it to the best man to carry and hand over when the time is right.

Let your family hold your engagement ring

When all else fails, you can always count on your family, right? This can be a great way to include a family member who perhaps doesn’t have a ‘job’ or have been as heavily involved in your wedding day.

Organise a jewellery box for your engagement ring before your big day

At the end of the day, it’s entirely up to the bride to choose how she’d like to wear her engagement ring, or who will hold. Our only piece of advice? Have a jewellery box or a pouch made for your engagement ring, and ensure that it definitely won’t go missing (every bride’s worst nightmare). Side note: if you’re on the hunt for the perfect jewellery box for your big day, we have just the thing, take a look at our Woodsbury ring box.
